Frequently Asked
Questions

1) Do all hand sanitizers work the same way?

No. When it comes to hand sanitizing products, formulation matters. The active ingredient is usually either ethanol or isopropyl but the total formulation affects the product’s effectiveness.

Also, some products are harsher on the skin, which is why we’re so proud that Ethisan has an enjoyable feel and scent.

2) Why do Ethisan hand sanitizers contain alcohol?

The CDC & WHO recommend that the general public use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available. Non-alcohol-based sanitizers aren’t as effective.

3) How many times can Ethisan hand sanitizers be used before washing hands?

Ethisan hand sanitizers can be used whenever hands are not visibly soiled. It can be used repeatedly, and there is no need to wash your hands between uses unless they become visibly soiled.

4) Do Ethisan hand sanitizers dry out your hands?

No. There is a misconception that the frequent use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers will dry out the skin on your hands. The truth is that formulation and active ingredients matter. Ethisan products have been developed to be used repeatedly without damaging the skin. Our sanitizer is gentler on hands than soap and water because it does not strip natural lipids away from hands.

5) When is it especially important to practice good hand hygiene?

 After using the bathroom

• Before eating or drinking

• After using a public phone

• After riding public transportation

• At schools and daycares

• After changing diapers

• When one is sick

• After shaking hands

• After sneezing or coughing

6) Can I use Ethisan hand sanitizer to clean my smart phone?

Generally, wiping the screen of a smartphone with hand sanitizer, alcohol, disinfecting wipes or bleach is NOT recommended. These cleaning products may damage the screen coating.

However, if you use a screen protector, you can use hand sanitizer to clean your screen and the rest of your smartphone without the risk of damage.

If you use iPhone, check Apple’s cleaning advice page to learn more about cleaning your iPhone.

7) What does GNS and USP grade mean?

The highest level of ethanol purity is “GNS” or “Grain Neutral Spirits,” beverage quality. This ethanol is domestically fermented from Canadian grain sources, typically corn or wheat. Depending on the type of grain and the enzymes used to break the starches down to sugars, different quantities and types of impurities are produced. In addition to meeting all of the quality requirements for USP and FCC grade materials, GNS beverage alcohol must pass stringent organoleptic analysis. Even with sophisticated analytical equipment and techniques, the human senses are able to detect impurities beyond the detection limits of the equipment. Since GNS ethanol is intended for human consumption, this test is the most important screening tool.

8) How long do you rub your hands together when using hand sanitizer?

Ensure that you rub your hands together for no less than 15 seconds (that’s about the same time it will take you to sing “Happy Birthday”). Better still, rub until your hands feel dry.
